Engarzá takes its name from the Spanish jewellery term for the setting that holds a precious stone — the metal embrace that gives meaning to the void at its centre.
In this sculpture, curved iron forms wrap around an empty space. That emptiness is not absence: it is the point of the piece. What surrounds, defines. What holds, gives value. The work asks whether what we cannot see or touch might be the most essential thing of all.
Engarzá belongs to the Jondo series, rooted in the depth and silence at the heart of Flamenco. Jondo — from cante jondo, deep song — is not about surface expression but about what lies beneath: the raw, the unadorned, the true. These sculptures seek that same quality. They are not decorative objects. They are objects that hold a question.
The iron has been worked to develop a natural rust patina — a surface that records time and exposure. No two patinas are identical. The finish on this piece is unique to it.
In 2022, Pablo Lara presented the Jondo series at a solo exhibition at Centre-Miramar in Sitges, Barcelona, alongside a live performance with vocalist Mariola Membrives. Watch the performance here.
